Robert Redford: a man from the red book.

Living without a TV is perfectly possible, that I tell ya. Has been more than a year now, contributing precious time for discovering great books & movies.

This time I want to give a special thanks to Robert Redford, whose talent is responsible for quite a few chocolate tablets I ate while watching his films. And there is his voice, a voice of a man, steady and solid. (have been thinking recently, mostly at my work, how can same things sound so differently depending on who is saying them, the impact on a listener is surprising - it made me work on my articulation as well).

No doubt, there are plenty of Redford´s works that deserve praise, but  mainly three of them I highly recommend.

1- "Out of Africa" (1985 - Sydney Pollack). "Why is your freedom more important than mine?"

Based on a memoir written by Isaak Dinesen, a pseudonym of a Danish baroness who owned a farm in Kenya. It is a long but an incredibly beautiful film that offers a mesmerizing visual treat for an eye. I think Meryl Streep did an extraordinary job here, making a viewer perceive that persistent and self possessing character of a baroness.

2- The Horse Whisperer (1998 - Robert Redford).  We all need some whispering ourselves.

Based on a novel by Nicholas Evans.  Love the cast (even little Scarlet!). Kristin Scott Thomas is perfect for a role of a city I-can-do-it-all woman who believes in discipline and diplomacy as the main way to manage around. One thing I learned from this movie - modern people are desperate for being whispered to; whispering that goes beyond individual´s space measures, beyond the believes that all that´s human can be rationalized and explained; and further than our new social standards for establishing an ego: it is a hard world with little space for emotional exposure and nobody gets paid for offering a shoulder to cry on, as only the weak ones cry and who wants to be friends with that kind?

The trailer is a bit too Hollywoody with those special music effects, but the movie is very much worth it.

3- Spy Game (2001 - Tony Scott). "Poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master." Leonardo Da Vinci

Simply out of pure love for thrillers and admiration for Redford. One of the greatest intelligent action movies I´ve seen - incredible non verbal and just verbal communication examples. Love intervenes in the  end, proving the fact that people simply cannot calculate everything. SOUNDTRACK is most incredible (use it for my running). Therefore, I won´t upload a link for a trailer but a sample of my favourite piece of music.

Shoot her day & night

Dear Ewa,

I dedicate this very first entry to my fabulous friend Ewa, the most caring friend, an ultimate romantic and a creative cook! I also named the blog after those fun moments we had after we first saw that wallet! I cherish our friendship because it is an "old school" friendship, a very rare kind nowadays. I guess it is the one that lasts no matter what.

I hope you receive my little something soon and will use it and enjoy it. It´s my turn for a visit now, so we will be seeing each other soon (no fingers crossed :)), as well as shooting each other!

Love you loads and miss you by my side. Distance makes it more exotic, though :)

P.S. Sending you this ugly pic of a very yummy tortilla we ate at Tortillería Flash-Flash - off to make one for me & Yasha.
